Putting Waste to Work: A Systems Approach Creating Energy and Fuels while Recovering Resources A Sustainovation In-depth Conversation with
James T. Caldwell, Ph.D. President of E3 Regenesis Solutions, Inc.
Thursday 8 March 2007 6:30 pm Registration, networking, tea and dessert
7:00 - 9:00 pm Speaker followed by group dialogue and discussion
Location: Sustainovation, part of Conexions office space, 1023 Corporation Way, Palo Alto
To date, most attempts to deal with waste reclamation, renewable energy and fuels have been piecemeal.Progress in 20th century business, economics and politics grew some economies at the expense of others. Progress has also come at the expense of our ecosystems and the natural resources upon which we depend. Our problems can no longer be solved in isolation from one other. In order to regenerate the resources we, and the world need, we must think in terms of whole systems, not one process at a time.
The evenings conversation will explore some of the widely prevailing models that work against the needed awakening. We will explore more versatile, systematic thinking about ways to manage waste and energy as parts of healthy, sustainable ecosystems. Dr. Caldwell will discuss several technologies, including clean plasma conversion and how it might fit with other waste recovery programs to create a zero-waste, integrated, sustainable system. Our dialogue will be framed in the context of the global climate and energy challenges, growth in China and India, and the recent re-emergence of mercantilism.
About James T. Caldwell, Ph.D. James Caldwell has been at the forefront of the Organizational Development and Transformation profession since learning and teaching Political Science and History in Texas and New York. He taught the rise and fall of civilizations around the world and co-edited a book called Aisles of Time that traced the development through history of political, economic, religious and legal systems. He is fluent in Chinese and worked in China for several years before serving as Assistant Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford. He founded Pacific Rim Connections to develop and market multilingual software and prepress solutions. He was the first Editor of the Unicode Standard for multilingual electronic communications in the 1990s, where he practiced the art of alliance building to solve seemingly intractable problems among engineers who did not see their problems in the same way. His work with renewable energy and environmental systems dates from a course he taught on The Politics of Energy and the Environment back in the 1970s.
Jim currently serves as President of E3 Regenesis Solutions, developing integrated systems to manage waste, energy and sustainable growth. Projects are underway in several parts of California and around the US. He serves with several non- profits, including Sustainovation, the California Biomass Collaborative, Acterra, Software Development Forum, Asian American Multitechnology Association, Bay Localize, the 1990 Institute and others.
